Agreen Landscape Fabric: Long-Lasting Protection Against Weeds
Ground cover fabric is a modern, versatile material for soil mulching that is an indispensable helper both for private households and for industrial farming. Made of durable, interwoven polypropylene tapes with added UV stabilizer, it provides reliable weed control and optimizes growing conditions for plants.
Key Properties and Advantages
Ground cover fabric works on the principle of light impermeability. Its dark color blocks sunlight, preventing the photosynthesis of weeds and leading to their complete suppression. Unlike agro-fiber, ground cover fabric is much stronger, allowing you to walk on it, move heavy containers and tools without the risk of damaging the material.
- Reliable weed protection: eliminates the need for weeding and herbicides, saving significant time, effort, and money.
- Soil microclimate optimization: thanks to its porous structure, the fabric allows water and air to pass through freely, preventing overwatering and mold formation. It retains heat at night and protects from overheating during the day.
- Moisture retention: reduces water evaporation from the soil, helping maintain optimal moisture levels and reducing irrigation costs.
- Improvement of soil structure: promotes the active reproduction of earthworms and beneficial microflora, protecting soil from weathering and erosion.
- Harvest cleanliness: prevents fruits from getting dirty during watering and rain, maintaining their marketable appearance.
Choosing and Using Ground Cover Fabric
When choosing ground cover fabric, it is important to consider its density, color, and operating conditions.
Density:
- 70 g/m²: Ideal for growing vegetable (tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants) and berry crops (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries). Also used for making agro-textile pots.
- 85-95 g/m²: Recommended for landscaping — flower beds, rock gardens, garden paths.
- 100 g/m²: High strength allows it to withstand significant mechanical loads. The optimal choice for mulching vineyards and soil in greenhouses.
- 130 g/m²: Maximum strength, designed for industrial greenhouses, garden centers, and slope protection against soil slippage.
Color:
- Black: The most popular option for weed control. Suitable for vegetables, berries, and fruit trees.
- Green: Used similarly to black, but due to its color, it heats up less, protecting the root system from overheating. An aesthetic option for landscaping.
- Black-and-white: Combines the advantages of both colors, providing effective weed control and less soil heating. Often used in industrial greenhouses and for preparing areas under paving slabs.
Rules for Laying Ground Cover Fabric
- Clear the area of weeds, stones, and debris. If necessary, install a drip irrigation system.
- Lay out the fabric, stretch it, and secure it along the edges with special pegs.
- Make cross-shaped or round holes for planting. To prevent fraying, it is recommended to use a hot cutter.
Strawberry Mulching Features
For perennial crops, ground cover fabric can be used for several consecutive years. However, when growing strawberries, a different approach is recommended.
Since strawberries require loose and well-aerated soil, it is advisable to remove the fabric every 3 years. This allows the soil to be loosened and the bushes renewed, promoting better plant development. After that, the ground cover fabric can be laid again.
As an alternative, ground cover fabric can be used between rows, while for mulching strawberry rows directly, it is better to use mulching agro-fiber. This method combines the advantages of both materials: ground cover fabric ensures convenience in inter-rows, while agro-fiber creates optimal conditions for berry growth.
High-quality materials are the key to a successful harvest. The price of ground cover fabric depends on material density and weaving type.
