Protection of plants from cold and frost: use of covering material

Protecting plants from cold and frost is an important task for gardeners. One of the effective ways to protect plants is the use of covering material. Here are some tips for using this material:  

Selection of material. Special covering agrofibre is used to protect plants from frost. It is a non-woven fabric of white color, which has good protective properties and allows air and light to pass through well. You can buy covering agrofibre with a density from 17 to 50 g/sq.m, in various sizes. Depending on the density, white agrofibre protects against frost down to -7°С.  

Covering time. It is important to cover the plants with covering material in advance, before the first frosts. If you wait until late autumn, plants may already be stressed by low temperatures.  

Covering method. Depending on the density of the agrofibre, it can be laid both directly on the plants or used to create greenhouses. An agrofibre 17-30 g/sq.m. is a light fabric that is used on beds after planting seedlings. When laying agrofibre with a density of more than 30 g/sq.m, you need to use wooden, plastic or metal supports. Due to the high density and heavy weight, it is not recommended to lay such material directly on the plants, as the canvas can break them.  

Correct attachment. The covering agrofibre must be well fixed so that it does not rise in the wind. Agrofibre can be fixed with the help of special pegs or a mound of earth around the perimeter.  

Snow removal. If you use the covering material during the winter, periodically remove the snow that may accumulate on it. Snow can create an additional load on plants and material.  

Timely removal of covering agrofibre. After the end of the frost, remove the covering material so that the plants can develop normally.
